94 T1-T2 patients, with
a baseline PSA lower or equal to 10ng/ml, treated with Ablatherm-HIFU
as first choice therapy were included in a study conducted
in Lyon (1). A very strict evaluation criterion, combining
both the biopsy and the PSA stability was defined. Even with
this strict criterion, a 77.5% Disease Free Rate (DFR) was
obtained, with a follow-up up to 80 months.
When results were stratified
according to the cancer aggressiveness (given by the Gleason
score), better results (85% Disease Free) were observed with
the less aggressive cancers. It is also interesting to note
that all the failures after Ablatherm-HIFU treatment occurred
early during the patient follow-up: within 20 months.
After this period, the curve was presenting
a plateau that is a very good indicator for the extrapolation
of the current results.
